Jake Holness

SAGE ESSA Registered Coach

Exercise Scientist

Jake is an Accredited Exercise Scientist who specialises in Musculoskeletal Injuries, Chronic Pain, pre-habilitation and general fitness training, goal orientated fitness, sports specific training and long term care. Jake completed his studies with the University of Melbourne and Australian Catholic University with additional units in neurophysiology and exercise physiology study abroad at The University of California San Diago. Jake is currently in his Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology at ACU. Before working with Sage Active  Jake developed skills over a number of years working as a health and wellness trainer in primary schools with post-natal mothers.

Ages and populations Jake has spent time with treating include age ranges from 18-78 in the discipline areas of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, rehab/prehab, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain. Having a background in personal training Jake is exceptional with exercise prescription and client experience. Jake is a homegrown farm boy and since moving to Melbourne in 2011, Jake has established himself as an experienced and professional in Health and Exercise Services.

Jake takes a longevity approach to health and wellbeing. He has recently started up his own blog in this area. Growing up on the farm and being a yoga instructor places a homely but professional nature about Jake. He uses exercise as a tool to empower individuals to improve their health and wellbeing. Jake’s intention is to help you live a longer, healthier life, free of pain. Jake enjoys AcroYoga, swimming, cycling, running, triathlons and getting outside in nature. He enjoys heading back home to the countryside to see his family and help his mum in the veggie garden.

Lachlan Terry

SAGE ESSA Registered Coach

Exercise Physiologist

Lachlan is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Accredited Exercise Scientist who specialises in Oncology (Cancer), Chronic Fatigue and Chronic Pain. Lachlan completed his studies with the University of New South Wales before working in a number of GP Clinics and Hydrotherapy Centres in Sydney and subsequently moving to Melbourne. Since moving to Melbourne, Lachlan established the Exercise Physiology Services for both Oncology Clinics Victoria and Cancer, Health and Exercise Services and is presently setting up the Cancer Exercise Rehabilitation services at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness Centre. Lachlan is an active reviewer for oncology research grants for Exercise and Sports Science Australia.

Populations Lachlan receives referrals for include cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and conditioning, diabetes, cancer rehab/prehab, chronic fatigue and chronic pain.

Lachlan takes a biopsychosocial approach to exercise with the view that exercise is for the benefit of your health and to help you live your life freely without pain or restriction. Lachlan enjoys soccer, cricket, tennis and any activity that involves good food or the great outdoors.


Josh McCarthy

SAGE ESSA Registered Coach

Josh’s passion for health and fitness grew while studying Physiology at Monash University. To compliment his studies, he graduated with a Sage Diploma of Fitness Coaching and quickly fell in love with the industry and all it had to offer. After completing his coaching qualification, Josh has pursued health and fitness as his full-time career and has a passion for helping his clients achieve their goals.

Josh’s approach to fitness is holistic and he aims to make it part of his clients’ every-day lives. Understanding that each client is different, Josh focuses on finding the perfect training regime and uses the most accurate measurement protocols available.

Josh is on his way to becoming an accredited Exercise Physiologist and is enrolled at Victoria University.


Apurva (Nikki) Verma

SAGE ESSA Registered Coach

Exercise Physiologist

Nikki is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist who specialises in the design and delivery of exercise programs.

Nikki has always had a passion and love for helping people, from all walks of life, suffering from various disabilities and challenging chronic conditions.

During her studies at Victoria University, completing a Postgraduate course in Exercise Rehabilitation, Nikki devoted 500 volunteer hours of clinical placements with different health care settings including Monash Medical centre, Hampton community centre, and the Victoria University gym. This practical experience provided her with skills and knowledge that have helped her provide a wide range of programs for apparently healthy clients as well as clients with various chronic conditions.

Nikki has worked in Medical Clinics, Hospitals and Health & Fitness facilities and she believes that properly managed exercise is the foundation of a healthy body, mind and wellbeing.


Robert  Hornsey


Qualified InBody 770 Consultant

Robert has over 40 years in the business world which began in the automotive industry, importing, retailing and wholesaling automotive share parts.

He then began working in the fitness industry where he joined forces with AFL Legend Doug Wade to purchase Lifestyle Fitness Centres which became the largest fitness group in Victoria.

Robert was the longest serving member of the Fitness Victoria board in the 1990s and in 2012 was inducted into the Industry body’s Fitness Industry Roll of Honour.

From the mid 1990s Robert established and operated vocational education institutes, training many thousands of Personal Trainers under the brands AIF and Sage Institute of Fitness.

Robert is passionate about the positive outcomes, Sage ESSA Coaches and other Sage endorsed allied health professionals, are having in providing a new benchmark in facilitating enhanced human performance and well being in the Sage Active communities.
